MARCH 1ST IS THE DEADLINE TO FILE FOR YOUR HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION
Don't pay too much for your property taxes!
There are many benefits to filing for your homestead exemption:
The exemption saves you money by taking the value of your home and reducing the taxable value by $50,000, therefore reducing the amount of property taxes you owe each year. (Simply put; if you paid $150,000 for your home, your taxable value now becomes $100,000.)
It caps the amount your property taxes can be raised to just 3% per year.
It protects you from a forced sale of your home to meet the demands of creditors, usually except mortgages, mechanics liens, or sales to pay property taxes.
Unfortunately the exemption won't take effect until the following tax year.
You can file online by mail or in person. Make sure you have your driver's license number handy, along with other information regarding your home. Most of the legal description of your home can be found either in your closing documents and/or on the Brevard County Property Appraiser website.
